Desktop installation of Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) is currently supported by Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Linux, Windows, macOS, and Chromebooks. However, deleting the icon may not clear the storage that a PWA is using. In most cases, the app can be uninstalled like any other platform-specific app.

The uninstallation process varies depending on each combination of operating system and browser. The requirements to allow installation also differ among browsers, with Google Chrome having its own set of criteria. For instance, installability may not be available as soon as a URL's response is received due to the time it takes for a PWA to meet the installability requirements.

Notably, Safari on macOS does not support installability at all. The metadata for your PWA is set by a JSON-based file known as the Web App Manifest, which will be covered in more detail in the next module.

For installation criteria, most browsers that support PWAs use the Web App Manifest file and certain properties such as the app's name and configuration of the installed experience. Each browser has its own criterion for marking when a website or web app is a Progressive Web App and can be installed for a standalone experience.

Interestingly, you don't need to create any package or executable for your PWA to be installed from a browser. A PWA must meet certain requirements, such as:

* Support specific capabilities

* Have a separate window within the operating system

* Appear as a result when a user searches for the app on their device

* Have an icon in the launcher, home screen, start menu, or launchpad

Once a user installs your PWA, it will provide a standalone experience.
